Nasty Canuck is an independent Canadian publication operated by Nasty Canuck Media Inc. We publish useful Canadian news, clear explanations and sharp commentary — with context, curiosity and character.

Our starting point is simple: Canada deserves coverage that is curious about the country, interested in how things actually work and willing to look beyond the headline. We cover policies, businesses, products, infrastructure, people and ideas that affect Canadians, with particular attention to choices that strengthen Canadian capability, resilience and independence.

We are proudly Canadian without being reflexively anti-American, anti-business, anti-government or anti-anything else. Good ideas can come from anywhere. Bad ones have passports too. We would rather look at the evidence than pick a team in advance.

Those formats give us structure, not cages. The subject determines the treatment. The editorial standard stays the same.

The Nasty Canuck lens

We are not interested in rewriting somebody else’s press release under a different headline. We want to know what is actually happening beneath the announcement and why a Canadian should care.

That means asking who is building, buying, hiring, investing or taking the risk. We look for the machinery beneath the politics: ownership, money, production, infrastructure, jobs, capability, dependency and the choices Canada will have tomorrow because of decisions being made today.

We also distinguish announcements from accomplishments. A factory that is producing is different from one that has been proposed. A company qualified to bid is not the same thing as a company with an order. Money committed is not always money spent.

And when Canada genuinely does something well, we are allowed to say so without first apologizing for the enthusiasm.

How we work

We aim to be useful before being loud, accurate before being fast, and serious without being solemn. Humour, understatement and the occasional dry elbow are available when the story earns them, but they are never substitutes for reporting, evidence or fairness.

We label our work clearly so readers know what they are reading.

Nasty Canuck produces its own reporting, synthesis, analysis, commentary and creative work. We use primary sources wherever practical, verify important claims and link readers to the evidence behind them.

We would rather tell you what we know, what we don’t know and why the distinction matters than manufacture certainty because it makes a cleaner headline.

We also use modern tools, including artificial intelligence, when they improve the work. Human editorial responsibility remains with Nasty Canuck, and material AI-assisted content is disclosed when it matters to understanding what you are seeing or reading.

Corrections matter too. If we get something materially wrong, we fix it. Sources matter. Context matters. Trust takes considerably longer to build than a webpage does.

What we are trying to build

Canada is a complicated country. We consider that a feature.

We want Nasty Canuck to become a useful place for people interested in what Canada is building, buying, changing, arguing about and getting right — readers who would rather understand something than simply be told how angry to feel about it.

We will not agree with every government, company, institution or reader, and we do not expect every reader to agree with us. What matters is doing the work, showing where our conclusions come from and giving Canadians something worth their time.
